“This is actually one of the nicest stations in the galaxy—too bad we don’t have the time to stay longer,” Kindie said as they walked across the station’s docking bay. There were several ships in the huge space, and it was busy with people moving back and forth and helping a ship unload its cargo.

On one end of the bay, there was a hallway attached, and then down the hallway, the station’s common area; Jared and Kindie finally stepped into it. The giant hub of stores and offices was also busy with people, both human and non-human. They passed by Jared and Kindie, several of the men looking at her in her ancient-style garb, including looking at her bare legs.

A flash of anger moved through Jared, but then he really didn’t have any right to be angry. And Kindie could take care of herself: she was physically pretty strong and the most brilliant person Jared had ever met. Now, a flash of regret passed through him, but it didn’t last long because he and Kindie finally reached the Ship Repair office.

He stood just inside the door in the office near some chairs; Kindie had some paperwork to do with one of the people at the desks inside. Then Kindie came back over to Jared. “Let’s go stay in the market area for now.”

They left the Repair office and walked back to the common area. Kindie stopped before a wall with an enormous view of space; Jared felt his stomach lurch at the sight of the black void. But there were twinkling stars among the black, and the brighter, hazy, yellowy area of one of the nebulae in this fold.

Kindie had a brown communicator button attached to the golden top of her toga, and she used it now to contact Lucretia in the Exciton’s engineering area. “Turn the shield calibration to baseline now, Lucretia. The diagnostic scan should start in about ten minutes. Send me the data from your end to my device.”

“You got it, Kindie,” Lucretia said.

When Kindie finally turned to look out at the view of space, Jared asked her about the ship, about the engine, if they needed to get more fuel at the station now.

She shook her head “no” fast. “We’re loaded up in storage, and we’re taking a shortcut to our destination.”

Her head turned back to him, and he smiled at her. “I lucked out when it was you and your ship parked at the GIC complex. I doubt anyone could get to where we’re going faster. I always meant to ask you how you invented your jump engine.” Jared did know that the Exciton’s quadruple jump engine was one of a kind; it yielded a more consistent speed and a more stable corridor, and needed less refueling than other jump engines.

And Kindie said to him now, in a lower voice, “Of course it’s a proprietary secret, how exactly I made the drive. But, I realized a long time ago that a lot of energy from the jump fuels and fields is wasted when it’s absorbed by the container of the engine.
